Which COLORBOND® Roofing Profile Do You Need?

Choosing the right profile comes down to three things: your roof pitch, your spanning requirements, and the look you’re after. Here’s a quick guide.

Corodek® (Corrugated): Australia’s most recognized roofing profile. The classic rounded corrugated roofing sheets suits residential reroofing, farm sheds, patios, garages, and heritage homes. Minimum pitch: 5°. Available in .42 and .48 BMT. Ideal for standard residential applications where a traditional profile is preferred.

Trimdek® / Trimclad®: Trimclad roofing is a low-rib trapezoidal profile with clean, modern lines and strong spanning capability. Popular choice for contemporary homes, extensions, sheds, and light commercial projects. Minimum pitch: 3°. Better spanning than corrugated, making it suitable for wider purlin spacings.

METLOK 700: A concealed-fix architectural roofing system with no exposed fasteners. Designed for long-run applications, low-pitch roofs, and projects requiring a sleek, uninterrupted surface. Minimum pitch: 1°. Recommended for licensed roofers and builders on architectural builds.

InsulRoof®: An insulated roof panel combining structural steel, insulation, and a finished ceiling in a single product. Suited to patios, alfresco areas, and carports where thermal comfort matters. Minimum pitch: 5°.

SolarSpan®: A composite insulated panel used for patios and covered outdoor living areas. Provides effective thermal performance also known as Cooldek panel, in a single panel. Minimum pitch: 2°.

Steel Thickness: .42 BMT vs .48 BMT

BMT stands for Base Metal Thickness, the standard specification for roofing steel in Australia, measured before coatings are applied..42 BMT is the correct choice for the majority of residential roofing projects. It delivers an excellent balance of strength, weight, and value for standard spanning conditions..48 BMT is suited to higher wind load areas, commercial builds, wider purlin spacings, and projects with specific engineering requirements. It provides additional rigidity and strength where standard residential specifications don’t apply. If you’re unsure which thickness applies to your project, check your building engineer’s specifications or contact our team.

COLORBOND® Roofing Colours

All profiles are available across the full COLORBOND® colour range. Popular choices include Monument®, Woodland Grey®, Surfmist®, Basalt®, Shale Grey®, Ironstone®, and Deep Ocean®. Q: What is the difference between COLORBOND® and Zincalume® roofing?

A: COLORBOND® is a pre-painted steel product, available in a range of colours with a paint system engineered for Australian conditions. It’s the standard choice for residential roofing where colour and appearance matter. Zincalume® is unpainted metallic-finish steel with a silver appearance, typically used in concealed, agricultural, or commercial applications where colour finish is not a requirement.

Q: What does .42 BMT and .48 BMT mean?

A: BMT stands for Base Metal Thickness, the thickness of the steel before protective coatings are applied. .42 BMT is standard for most residential roofing. .48 BMT is suited to commercial builds, higher wind load areas, or projects with specific engineering specifications.

Q: What COLORBOND® colours are available for roofing sheets?

A: All profiles are available in the full BlueScope COLORBOND® colour range, including Monument®, Woodland Grey®, Surfmist®, Basalt®, Shale Grey®, Ironstone®, Deep Ocean®, and more. See the individual product pages for full colour availability in your state.

Q: What’s the difference between Corrugated and Trimdek® roofing?

A: Corrugated (Corodek®) has a classic rounded wave profile suited to heritage, residential, and farm applications with a minimum pitch of 5°. Trimdek® is a trapezoidal rib profile with a more contemporary look, stronger spanning capability, and a lower minimum pitch of 3°. Trimdek® is the more popular choice for modern homes and extensions.

How much is Colorbond roofing per sheet?

Price depends heavily on the profile, thickness and length you order, plus your chosen colour or finish. ClickSteel’s roofing range spans standard corrugated profiles like COLORBOND steel Corrugated Roof Sheeting – Corodek and COLORBOND steel TRIMCLAD Roof Sheeting through to concealed-fix options like COLORBOND steel METLOK 700 Roof Sheeting and insulated panels such as the COLORBOND Insulated Roof Panels – Corrugated profile. Current per-metre pricing is shown on each listing and sheets are cut to the length you need. Insulated and concealed-fix profiles cost more per metre than standard exposed-fastener sheeting, so compare like-for-like profiles when budgeting.

What size do Colorbond sheets come in?

Roof sheeting from ClickSteel, including COLORBOND steel Corrugated Roof Sheeting – Corodek, COLORBOND steel TRIMCLAD Roof Sheeting and COLORBOND steel METLOK 700 Roof Sheeting, is cut to the exact length your roof run requires rather than sold in fixed pre-set panels, so you order by the metre up to the maximum length the profile and transport allow. Cover width is fixed by each profile’s rib pattern and is listed on the individual product page. Ordering the correct length for each roof plane minimises end laps, which are a common source of leaks. Check the specific cover width and maximum length on the product you’re ordering before finalising your roof plan.

Is Colorbond roofing steel or aluminium?

COLORBOND is a steel product, a metallic-coated steel base with a baked-on paint finish, not aluminium. ClickSteel’s steel roofing range includes COLORBOND steel Corrugated Roof Sheeting – Corodek, COLORBOND steel TRIMCLAD Roof Sheeting and COLORBOND steel METLOK 700 Roof Sheeting, alongside ZINCALUME Corrugated Roof Sheeting, which is the same metallic-coated steel base without the coloured paint layer. Steel roofing is generally stronger and more impact resistant than aluminium sheeting of comparable gauge, which is why it’s the standard choice for Australian roofing. Aluminium is used in some coastal or specialty applications but isn’t part of the COLORBOND product family.

How many years does a Colorbond roof last?

A COLORBOND steel roof typically lasts well in excess of 30 to 40 years when the right coating grade is matched to the site’s exposure and the roof is kept reasonably clean. Profiles like COLORBOND steel TRIMCLAD Roof Sheeting and COLORBOND steel METLOK 700 Roof Sheeting are used across both residential and commercial buildings for this reason. Coastal and industrial locations are more demanding on any coated steel product, so choosing an appropriate coating class and rinsing the roof periodically helps it reach its full lifespan. Uncoated ZINCALUME Corrugated Roof Sheeting also has a strong service life but without the colour finish.

Can I walk on a Colorbond roof?

You can walk on a COLORBOND steel roof, but only carefully, always stepping directly over the supporting purlins or battens rather than in the middle of an unsupported sheet span, and only on profiles rated to take foot traffic such as standard corrugated or trapezoidal sheeting like COLORBOND steel Corrugated Roof Sheeting – Corodek or COLORBOND steel TRIMCLAD Roof Sheeting. Walking in the wrong spot can dent or deform lighter gauge sheet and, on a pitched roof, is a genuine fall risk. Soft-soled, clean footwear reduces the chance of scuffing the paint finish. For anything beyond brief access, engaging a roofer with proper fall protection is the safer approach, since ClickSteel supplies the roofing materials but not roofing labour.

How much fall does a Colorbond roof need?

Minimum roof pitch depends on the sheeting profile, with exposed-fastener corrugated and trapezoidal profiles like COLORBOND steel Corrugated Roof Sheeting – Corodek and COLORBOND steel TRIMCLAD Roof Sheeting generally needing a steeper minimum pitch than concealed-fix profiles such as COLORBOND steel METLOK 700 Roof Sheeting, which can often run flatter due to their sealed side-lap design. The manufacturer’s technical data for each specific profile sets the minimum recommended pitch, and going below it risks water being driven back up under the sheet in wind-driven rain. Check the minimum pitch figure for your chosen profile before finalising the roof design. Your building surveyor or roofer can confirm the pitch is compliant for your project.

Do you need an air gap under a metal roof?

An air gap or ventilation space under a metal roof helps manage condensation and heat buildup, and is commonly created using blanket insulation with an integrated air gap, or by battening the roof off the structure, particularly under uninsulated profiles like COLORBOND steel Corrugated Roof Sheeting – Corodek or COLORBOND steel TRIMCLAD Roof Sheeting. Insulated panel systems such as the COLORBOND Insulated Roof Panels – Corrugated profile or the COLORBOND®️ Insulated Panels Sheeting – Trim profile build the insulation and airflow management into the panel itself, simplifying this requirement. Ventilation requirements can also be driven by the National Construction Code for condensation management in certain climate zones, so check what applies to your project. Your roofer or building designer can specify the right anti-condensation or ventilation solution for your roof profile and climate.
