How do you attach things to a Colorbond fence?

Fix into the fence rails or posts with a self-drilling tek screw rather than nailing, or forcing a fixing through unsupported infill sheet. The rails and posts are the structural parts of the fence, so anything with weight behind it, such as a letterbox, trellis or planter bracket, should land on a rail or a post where the load is properly carried. A Class 4 tek screw with a neoprene washer is the right fixing, and pre-drilling is not usually needed because the screw drills its own hole. Avoid over-driving, which dimples the sheet and cracks the paint film around the fixing point.

Can I screw into a Colorbond fence?

Yes. COLORBOND® steel fencing is designed to be assembled and fixed with self-drilling tek screws, and the infill sheets, rails and posts in ClickSteel’s range all go together this way. The thing to watch is the coating rather than the steel: using the wrong screw, over-driving it, or leaving a bare cut edge exposed is what invites corrosion, not the act of screwing itself. Use a corrosion-rated screw with a bonded neoprene washer so the fixing point is sealed against water. Screw into a rail or post behind the sheet wherever you can, since a fixing through unsupported sheet will work loose over time.

What are fence clips?

Fence clips is a general term for fixings that hold infill sheets in place along a fence line without screw heads showing on the face of the sheet. ClickSteel’s equivalent in this range is the COLORBOND® steel Corodek Fence Channel, sold as a pair from $16.80, which works with Corodek profile sheets to close and finish an edge where the sheet meets a rail or post. For the Metzag, Metline and Trimclad profiles, sheets are fixed conventionally with tek screws into the rails. Which approach suits you comes down to the sheet profile and the finish you are after.

How can I make my Colorbond fence look better?

Colour does the most work. The fencing range runs to 17 COLORBOND® colours, and on panel and gate kits the infill colour and the frame colour are specified separately, so the fence can either recede into the garden or be picked out deliberately. After that it is the detailing: post caps finish exposed post tops from $1.60 each, and the Corodek Fence Channel gives a clean flashed edge where sheet meets rail or post. Keeping the fence rinsed down and clear of moss, grime and lawn clippings at the base will keep the colour looking sharp for far longer than any accessory.

What screws should you use on a Colorbond fence?

Use Class 4 self-drilling tek screws, which is the corrosion rating ClickSteel supplies for fencing and the right choice across Australian conditions, including near the coast. Look for a hex head with a bonded neoprene washer, which seals the fixing point against water, and match the screw length to the rail or post you are fixing into rather than to the sheet alone. ClickSteel sells fencing tek screws in boxes of 50, in both a painted finish and a ZINCALUME® steel finish. Avoid over-driving: the washer should compress rather than crush, or you break the seal you were trying to create.

What are the parts of a fence called?

A COLORBOND® steel fence is built from three core parts: posts set into the ground or a slab, horizontal rails spanning between them, and the infill sheet fixed to the rails as the visible face of the fence. ClickSteel supplies fence posts at 1800mm and fence rails at 2365mm, with heavier 65 x 65mm gate posts at 2400mm used wherever a gate needs to hang. Finishing pieces include post caps, which cover exposed post tops, and gate stiles, which form the vertical edges of a gate. Knowing which part is which makes it much easier to order the right components when repairing or extending a run.
