Metal roofing supplies checklist: What you need to know before installing a metal roof

Installing COLORBOND roofing can be a challenging but rewarding project for homeowners who want to enjoy the benefits of a durable, energy-efficient and stylish roof. Before you start, you need to have a clear plan and a list of materials and tools that you will need.

Read on to discover some things you need to know before installing metal roofing supplies.

Choose the right metal roofing supplies

There are different types of metal roofs, such as corrugated, standing seam, ribbed, tile, and shingle. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages, depending on your budget, preference, and climate.

You also need to consider the colour, finish, and coating of the metal roofing supply, as they affect the appearance and performance of your roof. Some metal roofs can be ordered in custom lengths to avoid seams and waste, while others come in standard sizes that require cutting and fitting.

Prepare the roof deck and underlayment

Before you install the metal roof panels, you need to make sure that the roof deck is solid, clean, and level. You also need to apply a layer of underlayment over the roof deck to provide a barrier against moisture, heat, and noise.

The underlayment can be a self-adhesive membrane, such as an ice and water shield, or a synthetic or felt paper that is nailed or stapled to the roof deck. The underlayment should overlap the previous layer by six to eight inches and extend beyond the eaves and gables.

Install the drip edges and eave trim

The drip edges are metal strips that are attached to the edges of the roof to prevent water from seeping under the underlayment and the metal panels. The eave trim is a metal flashing that covers the drip edge and the edge of the metal panel at the eaves. The drip edges and eave trim should be fastened to the roof deck with roofing nails or screws and sealed with metal roofing sealant or butyl tape.

Install the metal panels

The metal panels are the main component of your metal roof. They should be aligned and secured to the roof deck with roofing screws that have rubber washers to prevent leaks. The screws should be driven into the raised ribs of the panels, not the flat areas. The panels should overlap each other by one or two ribs, depending on the manufacturer’s instructions. The panels should also have a one-inch overhang at the eaves and gables. You can use a circular saw with a metal-cutting blade to cut the panels to fit the roof dimensions.

Install the gable trim and ridge cap

The gable trim is a metal flashing that covers the edge of the metal panel at the gables. The ridge cap is a metal flashing that covers the joint of the metal panels at the ridge. The gable trim and ridge cap should be fastened to the metal panels with roofing screws and sealed with metal roofing sealant or butyl tape.

You can also use foam closure strips under the gable trim and ridge cap to fill the gaps and prevent insects and debris from entering.

Install the sidewall flashing and vent boots

The sidewall flashing is a metal flashing that covers the joint of the metal panels and the wall. The vent boots are metal or rubber fittings that seal the openings of the vents and pipes on the roof. Just like the gable trim and the ridge cap, you can use metal roofing screws and metal roofing sealant or butyl tape to fasten the sidewall flashing and vent boots with metal panels and the wall.

Upgrade your home with high-quality metal roofing supplies and expert tips

The above-mentioned are the basic steps for installing a metal roof. However, depending on the type and design of your roof, you may need additional metal roofing supplies and tools, such as valley flashing, hip and ridge flashing, rake trim, transition flashing and skylight flashing.

Installing a metal roof is not an easy task, and it requires a lot of skill, patience, and safety precautions. If you are not confident or experienced in roofing, you may want to hire a professional contractor to do the job for you.
