How to maintain Sydney fencing and gates

Find out how you can take care of Sydney fencing and gates so that they last longer.

fences and gates

Take care of your fences and gates

If you’re a homeowner in Australia, chances are that you have metal fencing and gates protecting the perimeter of your property.

In fact, galvanised steel fencing is by far the most common type of metal fencing and makes up 10% of the metal fencing used in Australia. This is because of the unmatched durability and strength of metal fencing and gates as compared to traditional wooden fences.

While these Sydney fences and gates are quite strong, they’ll still need a bit of maintenance if you want them to last a long time.

How can I maintain Sydney fencing and gates?

Here’s how you can maintain your metal fencing and gates effectively so that they last for a long time:

Conduct a regular inspection

At least once every 6 months, do a thorough inspection of your metal fencing and gates. Check for missing parts and damaged parts on your metal fence and gate that may need replacing. Also, make sure to check the fence’s foundation to make sure that it’s holding up well. This should be done after serious weather events like flooding.

Clean them regularly

Remove dirt, debris and any other foreign material from the surface of your metal fencing and gates. Wash the fences and gates with a mixture of mild detergent and clean water but don’t use any strong ammonia-based cleaners. After applying the water and detergent mixture, rinse the fence and gate with fresh water and allow it to dry.

Check for rust

Unless the fence and gate are made of COLORBOND steel, rust is one of the most common problems metal fences and gates can encounter. Check the metal fences and gates for clear signs of rust, especially in areas where the paint has started to come off. You may be able to repaint these rust-affected areas with anti-corrosion paint.

Grease the hinges

Make sure to thoroughly inspect your gate’s hinges every once a year. Open and close the gate to check if it makes loud squeaking noises. If the gate is noisy when moved, you may need to grease the hinges. Check which types of lubricant the manufacturer recommends for your gate’s hinges and apply it at least once every 12 months.

Frequently asked questions

Can metal fencing and gates be recycled?

Yes, unlike wooden fencing and gates, metal fencing and gates can be recycled multiple times when they reach the end of their lives.

What do I do if my metal fences have excessive rusting?

Too rusting can be almost impossible to fix. In this case, you may need to consider replacing the affected fence panels.

Are metal fences wind-resistant?

Yes, they are. But how well your metal fencing handles winds depends on how it was installed. Poorly installed fences may come out of their foundations during strong winds.
